Katie: Welcome back to the BusinessMakers Overtime Show heard here and online at theBusinessMakers.com/overtime.

John: It's good to be back. I didn't know I left. [Laughter]

Katie: I know, seriously man.

John: Hopefully you guys didn't leave either.

Katie: We move fast around here John. [Laughter]

John: That's right. [Laughter]

Katie: So we're here in Chapter 3 of Show 47 and we're gonna talk a little bit about technology, which is so unusual for us, you know.

John: I know. We never talk about it.

Katie: Never.

John: Actually before the show started we were talking about technology because I am avid fan of technology and I believe you are too.

Katie: Oh boy.

John: But the biggest problem I have, maybe it's because I'm getting older, I really don't know. I turn 30 in a couple of weeks. But the fact that I can't even really keep up with the technology advancements, you know. I just recently got HDTV - like I'd say recently within like a year or so.

Katie: Oooo fancy!

John: Watch out now. Iza gettin' a growns upa.

Katie: [Laughter]

John: But there's all this talk about 3D TV.

Katie: 3D TV.

John: Yeah, 3D TV; and do you have HDTV?

Katie: No. I have like this TV that's the size of my car.

John: Yeah; so have those old like CRTVs - those big old tube ones that weight a ton.

Katie: If I was strong enough, I could use it as a weapon against a robber.

John: [Laughter] I would pay to see you throw that thing, you know, and then I would turn to the World's Strongest Man. You'll be up there lifting those globes -

Katie: [Laughter] Exactly.

John: - and throwing them through windows or something. Here's a grand piano; whoooah, you know. But yes; see like you don't even have it, so I know there's a couple other people that don't even have HDTV, so why are they so eager to try to push 3D on us when HDTV first came out, you know, it was all across the board. People didn't know what format they were gonna have, you know, and they finally nailed it down not that long ago, you know -

Katie: Yeah.

John: - and the FCC passed these laws where you have to digital and everything else like that.

Katie: Well, and it's not just like somebody's pushing the technological envelope and, you know, building the first 3D TV ever.

John: No.

Katie: So every single major manufacturer has either announced or has on the market its own 3D-HDTV.

John: Yeah, but there's no content for it.

Katie: There no content.

John: Yeah, there's only like one thing and that's, I think, like a 3D version of Monsters Inc. or - I don't know. Monsters - I don't know, some Disney movie where there's like the big, tall gorilla and the blob. I don't remember the name of that move.

Katie: Monster's Inc., c'mon, that's a classic.

John: Was that really?

Katie: I think so.

John: Okay, okay.

Katie: With the one where the little kids, they were scaring the kids?

John: No, no, that's something different.

Katie: Aliens and Monsters!

John: Aliens and Monsters.

Katie: I never saw that one.

John: Yeah.

Katie: Well, there's that and of course UP was a huge 3D hit in the theatres.

John: Right, right.

Katie: I mean, that's out there as well; and then Avatar. And actually, I feel like James Cameron - gosh, he just keeps coming back in.

John: [Laughter] Hey James Cameron, come on into the show, we're gonna have you on here.

Katie: Butt out! Butt out of our show James.

John: "Yeah, I know movies. You guys are doing the show wrong. You should probably put in somebody here that's blue." It's radio Cameron, get outta here!

Katie: [Laughter] Was that your James Cameron impression?

John: [Laughter] That's my [Laughter] - that was horrible!

Katie: That was awesome.

John: That was horrible.

Katie: I have no idea what he sounds like. It totally convinced me.

John: It sounds like John Whiteside. [Laughter] I didn't even put on an accent.

Katie: You are James Cameron!

John: Whoa, well you gotta put in a blue Avatar here and uh, rip off some plot. [Laughter] Huah-bla-bla-bla-bla-bla-bla! [Laughter] Yeah, he's a frog, I don't know.

Katie: [Laughter] Esther, come back I'm scared!

John: Things are going weird here.

Katie: [Laughter] But -

John: Yeah, so there's 3D movies out there, but I don't even know if they're available for consumers. But they're pushing the TVs and everything and you gotta wear those glasses.

Katie: You have to wear glasses! That's so weird!

John: And I was at the Sony store and they had a display up there, and you know, it looked good; it looked good with the glasses on. I wouldn't say it was fantastic, I wasn't gonna go run out and buy it because I think it's way too much right now. Just wait for it come down. But you take the glasses off and you got blurry TV.

Katie: And it's not like you get the option of 3D or not 3D. Like it's just 3D.

John: Yeah; right.

Katie: Unless I could never see myself just wanting to watch a rerun of Gilmore Girls because I have sophisticated television watching taste -

John: Right. [Laughter]

Katie: - wearing a pair of freaking a hundred and whatever dollar 3D goggles, or glasses.

John: Right; right.

Katie: Now if I really wanted to see Avatar or - I mean, like I could see myself being like, "Hey guys, it's gonna be 3D night and you know, we're gonna cash in your college funds and get some extra glasses for our friends and watch this movie in 3D," and then the next day be back to watching Home and Garden television -

John: Yeah exactly.

Katie: - regular style.

John: Ya know. Like you have HDTV, people are always afraid about how they look on HDTV, then you're gonna have 3D. So you're watching like, you know, your animated ones, which will probably be okay. Then you go switch to, I don't know, Grumpier Old Men, you know, in 3D.

Katie: Not necessary.

John: Walter Matthau in my face; c'mon! [Laughter]

Katie: Actually, Grumpier Old Men, even in HDTV I just don't think -

John: Oh no!

Katie: And we've talked about this before, about how one of the biggest opponents of HDTV - and this of course isn't 3D TV, it's HDTV - was at the porn industry, because what a pain in the butt -

John: Mm-hmm.

Katie: - like, kind of literally, but that not appropriate. [Laughter]

John: Whah, whaaaaaah!

Katie: Not appropriate. Not appropriate Katie Laird. [Laughter] But yeah, I just - I don't get it, and I'm a super-crazy-tech-geeky-freaky, but not into the 3D.

John: Yeah, and other advancement of technology is this WiFi MAX, the 4G cell phones. Everyone knows what cell phones are. Everybody's excited to have smartphones with 3G -

Katie: Yes.

John: - you know and they talk about the best 3G coverage. And Sprint is the first one to come with the 4G, the fourth generation of WiFi MAX or whatever it's called, that allows you much faster download speeds than 3G.

Katie: Okay, which yay, that sounds good.

John: Yeah, but it's in limited markets -

Katie: Okay.

John: - and if you go anywhere, if you're traveling, you're not gonna obviously have between cities of Houston and Dallas, which both have the WiFi MAX. So I just recently bought a Smartphone. Has 3G; and I feel like such a loser now because there's 4G out there.

Katie: Don't feel like a loser.

John: Ah man, c'mon, I want 4G. But why would I pay for it, you know, if it's not heavily supported, they're trying to push - you know, I think 4G technology is probably a little bit better than 3G just because I think it's more useful, you know -

Katie: Yes.

John: - and you can use it for - business people could use it, you know.

Katie: Well and eventually - and I may be completely off-base here, but the 4G - won't our cell phones, like my magical Jesus iPhone, won't that eventually be able to be on the 4G network or I have to have a phone that's 4G capable?

John: I really don't exactly know how it works. I know in order to have the 4G, you have to have a 4G phone, which is capable also of 3G. But like your Jesus phone, you're talking about the iPhone there?

Katie: Of course.

John: Yeah. [Laughter]

Katie: What else would I be talking about? Do you listen to the show John?

John: You know what? I don't know if I do or not. But uh -

Katie: [Laughter] Esther!

John: C'mon iPhone! Here I am over here with the HTC Incredible and you know, and you got the iPhone. But no, the iPhone 4G is on AT&T which I haven't read anything about them getting the WiFi MAX or the 4G coverage. So they have it 4G, but I don't understand how it's gonna work, you know. They just announced that not too long ago, the iPhone 4G.

Katie: I think that technology companies, whether it's TVs, whether it's cell phone companies, whether - I mean, really any sort of technology. Even the weird things that they put in cars now. I think that they really are not being very perceptive on how pushing out like, "New technology, new word, new letters, letter combinations, acronyms, blah, blah, blah, blah!"

John: Yeah, slow it down, let me catch up.

Katie: I mean, I would be interested to see what their advertising PR and marketing firms are telling them whenever they take these different, you know, demographic analysis about how people are impacted. Like is it really gonna make them wanna buy something? Like I don't wanna buy something. I don't wanna spend extra money on something if I don't really, number one, get what it is if it's not something that fits into a piece of technology I'm already using, or it just -

John: Right.

Katie: I can't - and maybe I'm just off base, but I don't see that it's a great sales tactic, but they keep doing it, so maybe it's fantastic.

John: Porsche technology I mean, well I can hardly keep up, so that's just a small glimpse of all this technology. It's going way too fast I think.

Katie: Way, way too fast. I think we all just need to unplug -

John: That's right.

Katie: - except don't unplug your speakers because that would be really depressing for us.

John: Yeah, see. Yeah, keep that plugged in.

Katie: So bring us with you outside. Just take a deep breath. Drink some Kool-Aid.

John: And we're gonna get surreal sounding and maybe senses sound, so whenever we're talking or when we talk about food, we'll have a smell coming through the speakers. I'm gonna make that happen and everyone catch onboard here. I'm just trying to get ahead of the curve here.

Katie: You're like the Willy Wonka of the radio world.

John: That's right. Go ahead and like, smell your speaker; smell those electrons.

Katie: That's revolting. I don't stand by that statement at all. [Laughter]

John: Whoo, what a fun show! I don't know how to spell entrepreneur and I'm coming up with dumb ideas. And somehow, James Cameron stopped by.

Katie: [Laughter] Yeah, weird.

John: Uh-rub-bra-bra-bra-bra-bra-bra-bra-bra! Yeah. I think I'm done here.

Katie: [Laughter] I think you might be done too. I mean, just go - put you to bed, you know.

John: Yeah.

Katie: Whenever kids get too excited -

John: That's right.

Katie: - gotta calm them down. [Laughter]

John: Too much Kool-Aid.
