The BusinessMakers Overtime - Week of February 17, 2010: Our Unbelievable 30th Episode

Episode 030 originally broadcast on February 17, 2010

To celebrate our 30th Episode we are going to focus on Beauty. Esther has a great chat with the founder of the online magazine The Beauty Bean Alexis Wolfer who is a huge advocate of promoting women's health, well-being and glamour without the focus on weight and negative body image. As ridiculous as this may seem, did you know that beauty does have an effect on a few factors in the workplace? Esther and Katie will tell you what to look for and how to use this to your advantage. Plus it seems when the economy is on the rise, so is plastic surgery... but did the economy really effect how much people went under the knife? Also the girls will discuss controversy in the the military and the Miss Colombian stir.

The Business of Beauty

Katie Laird and Esther Steinfeld dissect the week’s business news in a beautiful show that takes a skin-deep look at the Beauty Business. The military is requiring that the “morning-after” pill be available at all U.S. military bases; don’t even THINK about getting pregnant in Iraq! A young beauty queen has thrust tanning beds into the spotlight as cancer-causers. (Have you heard our interview with Throwing Copper?) Some citizens of Colombia believe that Natalia Navarro, Miss Colombia, needs a quick nose job. We discuss cosmetic surgery in a sagging economy; pun intended. (“Have you seen laser ab etching?!”)

Alexis Wolfer founder of The Beauty Bean

Alexis Wolfer established TheBeautyBean.com with the intent to promote women’s health, well-being and glamour WITHOUT the focus on weight and negative body image. She has staffed her online magazine with an intriguing array of authors and passions. Esther visits with this remarkable young woman, who offers insightful vision to the beauty industry, the female consumer and starting a business. (“Take a chance. The worst thing someone can say to you is ‘no.’”)

Beauty in the Workplace

Katie and Esther lament turning 30—SHOWS! Are you current on beauty research? Deny it as we may, the fact is that a woman’s looks DO have an impact on her level of success in the workplace. What if the person hiring is the attractive one; could there be “hotness” discrimination? And guess what—CONFIDENCE is a factor in whether a person is considered attractive! (“Knowing your stuff can actually make you hotter!”)
