Video and Full Interview Text

Leisa: Hello. I'm Leisa Holland-Nelson and welcome to another edition of Women Mean Business, where we're going to take you up close and personal with extraordinary women doing extraordinary things. My guess today is Annette Monks, President of Carlton Staffing and Carltech Staffing. Annette, welcome to Women Mean Business.

Annette: Thank you for having me today, Leisa.

Leisa: I'm gonna guess when you were playing in the backyard as a young girl, you didn't dream of being in the staffing business.

Annette: No, I didn't.

Leisa: Tell us how you got there.

Annette: Well, of course, it was by accident. There's not a degree out there for staffing. I graduated from the University of Houston and I went to work immediately for my father's insurance agency. I just wanted to do something of my own. Through a cousin of mine, I was referred to a staffing company, a national staffing company, to interview and I thought I would interview for an office manager position or a position with one of their clients. Little did I know, they had me interviewing to work there and next thing I know, I was starting on the recruiting desk and I just worked my way up through the industry. After 24 years, here I am.

Leisa: That's really very, very cool.

Annette: That is cool.

Leisa: I think recruiting is one of the most fun things a person can do. Tell us a little bit about recruiting.

Annette: Well, the thing about recruiting is it's very altruistic as well. Yes, in this business, you can make a good living but you can help so many people. You can help people find jobs and we always say we put food on the table for over 700 people in our company every week, which is very fulfilling. At the same time, we have clients who are desperately looking for people, especially now, and we help them meet their production goals. It's a triple win.

Leisa: A win-win for everyone. Thank you very much. There you have it, another extraordinary woman doing extraordinary things. I'm Leisa Holland-Nelson, President and Cofounder of Content Active, Houston's leading web and mobile design and development company. You can find me at or follow me on Twitter @LHNelson. We'll be back again next week with another edition of Women Mean Business.
