Women Mean Business host Leisa Holland-Nelson gets extraordinary advice from Jacqueline Northcut, CEO of BioHouston Inc. Jacqueline has some great advice for a young professional woman.
Leisa: Hello. I'm Leisa Holland-Nelson, and welcome to another edition of Women Mean Business, where we're going to take you up close and personal with extraordinary women doing extraordinary things. My guest today is Jacqueline Northcut, the CEO of Bio Houston, one of Houston's leading non-profit organizations, managing the transfer of research to product companies to get drugs and devices to consumers.
I know I've said a lot, and I know it's not an ordinary job that you have. If we had a young professional woman sitting here with us today and she wanted to get to your position, what advice would you give her, Jacqueline?
Jacqueline: Well, probably the advice that I give to a lot of young people and worked with a lot of young people throughout my career, and that is I think in any job that you do I think you should treat that job as if you owned the business. Because it is just amazing how it will influence almost every decision and probably influence it differently if you really make your decisions as if you owned the business.
Leisa: Watch the profitability, watch the people, really pay attention.
Jacqueline: Right. I mean I think the other thing I would say is, and you've probably heard this before, but every time I didn't trust my gut instinct, you know, are the times that I've made mistakes. And so that little bird on your shoulder is telling you the right answer.
Leisa: So own it and trust yourself, that's your advice?
Jacqueline: Right.
Leisa: Wonderful. Thank you very much. There you have it; extraordinary advice from another extraordinary woman.
