Women Mean Business host Leisa Holland-Nelson interviews Sarah Groen, co-founder and director of SURGE Accelerator, mentor-driven seed accelerator, focused on energy software.
Leisa: Hello, I'm Leisa Holland-Nelson and welcome to another edition of Women Mean Business, where we're going to take you up close and personal with extraordinary women doing extraordinary things. My guest today is Sarah Groen. Sarah is co-founder and Director of Surge, an energy accelerator here in Houston, Texas. Welcome, Sarah.
Sarah: Thanks, Leisa.
Leisa: Tell us about Surge.
Sarah: Sure. So Surge Accelerator is a mentor-drive seed accelerator, focused on energy software. So what we do is we bring in aspiring entrepreneurs from around the country who are focused on solving the world's energy problems using software. That's our tag line. We bring those companies into Houston; we invest in them; and we put them through a 12-week sort of boot camp program where they really accelerate their businesses. Hopefully, they get 1 to 2 years' worth of benefit and work out of a 12-week program.
Leisa: Amazing. Is there a particular profile of the companies you're looking for - men, women, anything in particular?
Sarah: No, you know, we don't look for anything in particular but one thing that was amazing about our last class was that we had seven women co-founders or management team members in these early startups which, in energy, in software, IT, in entrepreneurship is pretty much unheard of for an accelerator.
Leisa: Fabulous. Congratulations.
Sarah: Thanks.
Leisa: There you have it; another extraordinary woman doing extraordinary things.
