Video and Full Interview Text

Leisa: Hello. I'm Leisa Holland-Nelson and welcome to Women Mean Business where we're gonna take you up close and persona with extraordinary women doing extraordinary things. My guest today is Alyce Alston, chairman and CEO of Culture Map.com. Alyce, congratulations on joining Culture Map. I know you've had an extraordinary career. Tell us a little bit about some of the highlights.

Alyce: Well, with the highlights, I'll give you a couple.

Leisa: Okay.

Alyce: I had the great privilege of launching Oprah magazine. First person who started it sitting in an office. It was fabulous.

Leisa: With Oprah?

Alyce: With Oprah. Oprah hired me, yeah.

Leisa: I can't imagine. Oh my goodness.

Alyce: I was really - it was really exciting. Secondly, I launched DeBeers in the United States, their retail stores when that was a joint venture with LVMH and with DeBeers in Europe and so I launched our stores throughout the country and that was a huge opportunity for me. I was a president at Reader's Digest association, a $3 billion global organization and then was most recently the CEO of a $300 million mid-cap company - manufacturing recognition company.

Leisa: So you have had multiple opportunities and multiple different industries but always sort of consumer based, getting the consumer what they want.

Alyce: You're so with it. You're so right. It's always about the consumer and that's what I learned in publishing and in 15 of growing up in publishing is it's about the consumer. So I stayed consumer centric. I've applied that to the businesses that I translate - that I worked in and was successful by staying with that philosophy.

Leisa: Thank you very much. There you have it - another extraordinary woman doing extraordinary things. I'm Leisa Holland-Nelson, president and cofounder of Content Active, Houston's leading web and mobile technology company. You can find me at Content Active.com or follow me on Twitter at LHNelson. We'll be back again next week with another edition of Women Mean Business.
