Women Mean Business host Leisa Holland-Nelson, president of ContentActive, interviews Charlene Ripley, SVP and general counsel, LINN Energy.
Leisa: Hello, I'm Leisa Holland-Nelson and welcome to another edition of Women Mean Business, where we're gonna take you up close and personal with extraordinary women doing extraordinary things. I'm very fortunate today to be coming to you from the Greater Houston Women's Chamber of Commerce and with me is Charlene Ripley, Senior Vice President and General Counsel of Linn Energy, which again, is a lot to say, Charlene. Tell us about your company, your job, and how you got there.
Charlene: Thank you, Leisa; well it's a real honor to be interviewed by you today.
Leisa: Thank you.
Charlene: And Linn Energy, we're an upstream oil and gas company. We're based in Houston. We produce oil and gas across the United States. We were started back in 2003 with just a few oil and gas properties and now we have a enterprise value of almost $13 billion.
Leisa: That's amazing.
Charlene: Rapidly growing.
Leisa: Amazing.
Charlene: Yeah, very exciting company to be with.
Leisa: Yes.
Charlene: Yes.
Leisa: Yeah, so exactly what do you do there?
Charlene: What do I do? I do lots of things. I'm not only the general counsel, I'm also in charge of the IT Department, government relations, risk, insurance, enterprise risk management, all that.
Leisa: Looks like you are -
Charlene: Sometimes when there's things that they don't know where to put, they'll stick it under me, so -
Leisa: Oh my God. You are the woman to know at Linn Energy. Are there a lot of women in management at Linn Energy?
Charlene: They're - we're getting better. There could always be more women. I'm the only woman on the executive team but we have some real, real amazing up-and-coming women in the ranks, to come up to more senior leadership roles.
Leisa: Do you have any special advice for women looking to join your company or be in your industry?
Charlene: The energy industry is still very male-dominated - I'll just put it out there - but if you have a real passion for what you do, you like the entrepreneurial spirit, you are good with people, good communicators, you're gonna do very well and it's important to find someone who's gonna be your sponsor in the company, as you wanna rise up in the company, you have to find a sponsor. It's not only about just working really hard; it's knowing the right people.
Leisa: Thank you, that's great advice. There you have it: another extraordinary woman doing extraordinary things. I'm Leisa Holland-Nelson, President and co-founder of Content Active, Houston's leading Web and mobile technology company. You can find me at contentactive.com or follow me on Twitter at lhnelson.
