Video and Full Interview Text

Leisa: Hello, I'm Leisa Holland-Nelson and welcome to another edition of Women Mean Business, where we're going to take you up close and personal with extraordinary women doing extraordinary things. My guest today is Chloe Dao, designer, owner of Dao Chloe Dao, Project Runway winner, yadda, yadda, yadda.

Chloe: That's so long ago.

Leisa: If there's fashion and design involved -

Chloe: I'm in it.

Leisa: - you're in it. Chloe, I think a lot of the younger generation would love to be in the fashion business. I don't know how easy it is in Houston, but I bet there's some advice that you probably have to give them. What would you tell -

Chloe: Well I think the best thing now about being in Houston is anywhere's possible in fashion 'cause of the Internet. You can start small, start your online business and just keep it really safe and low overhead costs. But I think the biggest thing I always tell the young interns or designer is know your craft, so that when you are in business, you can always argue a price or say, "This is possible," when they say, "No, this is not possible." You know the key to staying in business is to have cash flow and knowledge is power and education.

Leisa: So the business of fashion is sometimes as important as the creative side?

Chloe: More important sometime. Creative, you know, I think designers are 90 percent problem-solver and 10 percent creative.

Leisa: That's great advice.

Chloe: Yeah.

Leisa: There you have it, another extraordinary woman doing extraordinary things. I'm Leisa Holland-Nelson, President and co-founder of Content Active, Houston's leading Web and mobile technology company. You can find me at contentactive.com or follow me on Twitter at lhnelson. We'll be back again next week with another edition of Women Mean Business.
