WMB host Leisa Holland-Nelson, president of ContentActive, interviews Candace Beeke, editor of the Houston Business Journal.
Leisa: Hello, I'm Leisa Holland-Nelson, and welcome to another edition of Women Mean Business, where we're going to take you up close and personal with extraordinary women doing extraordinary things. My guest today is Candace Beeke, editor and chief of Houston Business Journal. Candace, did you always know you wanted to be a journalist?
Candace: No. I knew as a child that I wanted to be a writer. My grandfather repaired Royal typewriters. That was his first job when he got outta the war, and so I grew up around the these beautiful gleaming black typewriters, and I played on them, and maybe that had something to do with the fact that I always wanted to be a writer. But I really resisted the urge to be a journalist for a long time. I worked on the high school newspaper, but once I got into college, I tried a lotta different things, including public relations, because I did not want to do the kinda journalism where you have to go knock on someone's door after a tragedy, and that's how most daily journalists have to start. That's the tour of duty.
So the first ad I answered to be a journalist was somebody looking for a manufacturing reporter at a business journal in West Michigan. And I was doing PR at a manufacturing company, and I thought, "Well, I could do this. I probably don't have to write about any tragedies," and then, of course, the auto industry fell apart in Michigan, so I did do a little bit obituary writing to some extent. But I learned that I loved it, and business is extremely personal to people. These are people who have invested everything. They're passionate about what they do, and I love telling those stories. So I was very fortunate to get into the industry I did.
Leisa: Thank you for sharing that with us. There you have it, another extraordinary woman doing extraordinary things.
