Video and Full Interview Text

Leisa: Hello. I'm Leisa Holland-Nelson, and welcome to another edition of Women Mean Business, where we're going to take you up close and personal with extraordinary women doing extraordinary things. My guest today is Jessica Givens, founder and president of All-in-One Academics. Welcome back, Jessica.

Jessica: Thank you. Thank you so much for having me.

Leisa: Tell us briefly about All-in-One Academics.

Jessica: All-in-One Academics is a comprehensive tutoring and admissions company in Houston. We help students explore and discover their passions, and then we help them seize upon those and create perfect college applications so they can go off and pursue their dreams.

Leisa: What gave you the idea or the inspiration to start All-in-One Academics?

Jessica: Well, it was born of necessity, actually. I had just quit dental school. I had absolutely no idea what I was going to do next. I left my ex husband and was getting a divorce and my dad was furious 'cause he worked at his law firm, and my dad said, "Well, you're gonna have to come live a home," and I said, "Oh, no, I'm not gonna live at home." And he said, "Well, what are you gonna do?" and I said, "Well, I have a tutoring student. And he said, "You have one tutoring student?" and I said, "Yeah, I have one. It looks promising." And with that one tutoring student, I went out and got a lease on an apartment, and by the end of the year, people had referred their cousins and friends. And by the end of the year, I had 15, and then I had to hire somebody. And now I've worked with thousands of kids. It's unbelievable how well it's gone. I guess it's just because we really care.

Leisa: Congratulations. That's so exciting, and I know you have a book, too. You've done a lot.

Jessica: Thank you. Yes, it's been a lot of work, but it's been wonderful.

Leisa: Great, great. There you have it, another extraordinary woman doing extraordinary things. I'm Leisa Holland-Nelson, president and co?founder of Content Active, Houston's leading Web and mobile technology company. You can find me at contentactive.com, or follow me on Twitter at @lhnelson.
