Episode 376: Entrepreneurs Making Our Lives Better!
The BusinessMakers interview the talented Carol Isaak Barden, a “couture-quality” homebuilder; and Brad Burke is back to promote the Rice Alliance’s upcoming Energy & Clean Technology Venture Forum. In our vignettes, Greg Price interviews Charles Philpott, a certified fraud examiner for PKF; and Leisa Holland-Nelson interviews Jacqueline Northcut, CEO of BioHouston Inc.
Russ and John present the show about the working class, the ones who DID build it. And they are the ones paying the big tax dollars. We might embellish a bit, but we don’t spin! Includes: The BusinessMakers Quote of the Week—a scary quote from Winston Churchill; This Week in Business History includes momentous events such as the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, the enactment of the first bankruptcy laws, the creation of the potato chip and your local Toyotathon; the Jargon Challenge Round—trendy technospeak that YOU should know; and Dumb Moments in Business—al Qaeda is recruiting new bombers.
Carol Isaak Barden’s years as a travel writer took her all over the world. Coming home to plain, boring and treeless American real estate design was always depressing; Carol felt she could do it better. She had always loved home construction and renovation and, in 2002, began collaborating with architects to design and oversee the building of speculative homes that were distinctively different. Her recent move into custom homebuilding was a natural transition. Russ returns for an update with a woman who builds “couture-quality” homes.
Russ chats with Brad Burke, managing director of the Rice Alliance for Technology & Entrepreneurship about its upcoming Tenth Annual Energy & Clean Technology Venture Forum, a one-day event. The Rice Alliance, founded in 2000, is a nationally-recognized initiative that supports the launch of startup technology companies through education, networking competition and (enormous) cash prizes. Its Business Plan Competition is the world’s largest and richest of its kind.
Women Mean Business host Leisa Holland-Nelson, president of ContentActive, interviews Jacqueline Northcut, CEO of BioHouston Inc.
Your spreadsheets should be reliable and secure. Greg Price discusses internal audits and risk remediation with Charles Philpott, CPA and certified fraud examiner for PKF.
