Video and Full Interview Text

Leisa: Hello, I'm Leisa Holland-Nelson and welcome to another edition of Women Mean Business where we're going to take you up close and personal with extraordinary women doing extraordinary things. My guest today is Karen Kershner, founder and Presidentress of Communications Plus. Karen, imagine we have a young woman here who's interested in doing her own thing. What advice would you give her?

Karen: Oh, that's a great question. I would tell her to have a good plan. To know that she has a good network. To research if there's a need for it. And make sure that whatever she's going after, she has a passion to work in because I think if you're passionate about something and enthusiastic and sincere with the people you work with, people are pretty forgiving if you stumble a little and they really want you to succeed 'cause they know it's really important to you. I started my business when I was 28 and literally, when I told my dad I was doing it, he cried because he was afraid I wouldn't succeed. And it was my intent that I would never not succeed and so I say, you know, have your goals and never - never look back, always look forward. Don't spend too much time licking your wounds 'cause there's an opportunity you'll miss while you're crying.

Leisa: Oh, that's wonderful. Thank you very much. There you have it. Extraordinary advice from an extraordinary woman. I'm Leisa Holland-Nelson, President and co-founder of Content Active, Houston's leading Web and mobile technology firm. You can find me at contentactive.com or follow me on Twitter at lhnelson. We'll be back again next week with another edition of Women Mean Business.
