Greg Price introduces PKF’s tax director Mark Scimemi, who defines use tax.
Greg: This is PKF Texas, The Entrepreneur's Playbook. I'm Greg Price, Director of Consulting Solutions, and I'm here with our newest Tax Director, Mark Scimemi. Mark is a guru in state and local tax matters and is considered one of the city's foremost experts in this subject. So, Mark, welcome to the Playbook.
Mark: Thank you, sir.
Greg: So, Mark, in state and local tax matters, there's sales and there's use tax. What's one of the biggest getcha-gotchas in that area?
Mark: The biggest unknown that businesses face is the use tax part, paying use tax on invoices that did not have sales tax accrued on them.
Greg: Can you give us an example of what that might be?
Mark: Sure. Let's say you're a business and you order office supplies online. The office supplier ships them to you via UPS. That office supplier probably is not required to collect sales tax. You're supposed to independently remit use tax to the state.
Greg: Wow. You know, that's something I've never known before, and I'm glad I had you here today because I learned that. This has been a Thought Leader Production, brought to you by PKF Texas, The Entrepreneur's Playbook. Tune in next week for another chapter. And remember if you have state and local tax matters, give PKF Texas a call.
