Video and Full Interview Text

Leisa: Hello. I’m Lisa Holland-Nelson, and welcome to another edition of Women Mean Business, where we’re going to take you up close and personal with extraordinary women doing extraordinary things. My guest today is Candace Beeke, editor in chief of Houston Business Journal, one of the city’s leading weekly newspapers. Candace, I just said a mouthful. You’re very young. Your job is huge. I know the newspaper business is not easy today. What’s your life like?

Candace: Well, it’s interesting, absolutely. I don’t know that the newspaper business has ever been easy. It’s different today and different challenges, but one of the things that I think is a misperception among the masses is that technology has made our jobs more difficult. In truth, technology has given us a great opportunity. We’re at a weekly, so it used to be if we wanted to break news, we had Friday morning to do it, and we’d deadline a couple days before that. So news that broke on say a Thursday, we didn’t have it. Now we have the web. Now we have an opportunity to level the playing field with our daily competitors even more, and we take full advantage of that. We break news every day, all day on our website. So I really think that there’s a lot of opportunity in newspapers. But it is definitely different. You have to be able to adapt and evolve.

Leisa: That’s really cool. There you have it. Extraordinary information from an extraordinary woman. I’m Lisa Holland-Nelson, president and co-founder of Content Active, Houston’s leading web and mobile technology company. You can find me at http://www.ContentActive.com, or follow me on Twitter at LHNelson. We’ll be back again next week with another edition of Women Mean Business.
