Russ and John present the show for the ones who are REALLY going to save the economy—the idea-makers and the artists who create more taxpayers. Includes: BusinessMakers Quote of the Week—true words (heavy sigh) from economist John Nye; This Week in Business History includes such diverse personalities as Sir Francis Drake, Ludwig van Beethoven, the Titanic, President Franklin D. Roosevelt, Sam Walton and Tammy Wynette; Navigating Business Jargon—acronyms, technospeak and new stuff; and Dumbest Moments in Business History—The Governor of New York creates a new tax bracket.

Michael Holthouse and John Sheptor, Lemonade Day!

Russ visits with Michael Holthouse, founder of Prepared 4 Life, and John Sheptor, CEO of Imperial Sugar and title sponsor of Lemonade Day 2009. Holthouse and Sheptor are promoting May 3 as Lemonade Day 2009, the day we teach our kids how to build the American Dream—one lemonade stand at a time. Lemonade Day was first held in 2007 with 2,600 lemonade stands. More than 11,000 lemonade stands popped up on Lemonade Day 2008. With significant backing from Imperial Sugar and thousands of other supporters, Lemonade Day 2009 is destined to be even greater, with as many as 25,000 lemonade stands staffed by as many as 75,000 eager young entrepreneurs expected to participate. Houston Astros legend Jeff Bagwell will return as celebrity spokesman for the third consecutive year. This is an amazing event—don’t miss this chance to help launch a new generation of entrepreneurs!

Jack Smyth, Spring Medical Systems Inc.

Jack Smyth was part of a group of physicians and technology professionals who founded Spring Medical Systems to provide electronic support to the medical community. Spring Medical Systems’ flagship product, SpringCharts EHR (Electronic Health Records), provides data management, communication and compliance services that empower physicians to better manage their clinical and administrative tasks. Electronic Health Records has been approved for funding by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act; $17.2 billion is available for reimbursement to doctors who move their patient data to electronic records as an incentive for them to join the digital age. Smyth has already begun to see an increase in his company’s workload and expects “a wild ride” for the next few years.
